Geert Jan Jansen paints “in the manner of”

From November, Museum Nienoord shows the work and life story of Geert Jan Jansen. His paintings move between a style of his own and the styles of historical artists; today he signs them with the addition “in the manner of”.

Geert Jan Jansen now signs his work with his own name, with the addition “in the manner of”. Museum Nienoord places his work and life story in an exhibition that raises questions about art, authenticity and the line between genuine and fake.

According to the museum, Jansen paints in a style entirely his own, but also makes paintings in the style of a wide range of historical artists.

In 2018 Jansen was the central figure in True Copy, a theatre production by the Antwerp theatre company BERLIN.

Jansen exhibits at Museum Nienoord in Leek from November 2026 to September 2027.

The museum’s website links the addition “in the manner of” to inspiration drawn from the style of other artists.
