Recognise first
Start with what you think you recognise in a work: a figure, an object or a space. Then see whether the proportions and the setting fit that first impression. You do not need to be able to name an art movement to notice differences.
Then look again
An unexpected combination can change your first reading. Give yourself time to explore which details do this. The information with the work can then help you understand the artist’s choice.
A museum with activities
Alongside changing exhibitions, Thijnhof says it organises workshops, talks, literary afternoons and sessions with artists at work. The culture café is also part of its programme. Check the calendar if you want to combine looking at art with a conversation or making something yourself.
Before you go
The regular schedule is Friday to Sunday. Guided tours for groups are offered on request.
