From cowshed to museum
The museum has existed since 2009. Owner Piet Heeringa converted part of the old farmhouse into exhibition space and expanded it in 2014 and 2023. He took over his parents' dairy farm in 1984 but sold the cows, quota and land after the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease crisis. He collects school materials, stuffed animals and above all wall charts.
Ten Hoeve's collection
In 2009, former teacher and politician Hendrik ten Hoeve of Leeuwarden entrusted his collection to Heeringa. The museum says it included 2,500 charts, from In en om ons huis to In de dierenwereld. They were drawn, painted or watercoloured by hand and mounted on linen or cardboard. Wall charts appeared in classrooms in the 19th century; teacher and illustrator Hendrik Jan van Lummel began making them around 1860–1870.
Groups and surroundings
Groups receive Frisian orange cake during their visit. A visit to the church, the Sipel, can be arranged as part of the visit. Behind the museum stands the American-style wind engine Heechiem, for which the owners serve as millers.
