De Schoppe
The museum occupies a barn dating from 1910 that has largely retained its old form. The barn belongs to De Neeth farm, built in 1914. Th.G.J. Lammers from IJzerlo bought the farm in 1899. The old house was demolished, and the Lammers family lived in the Schoppe in the meantime. For many years, the barn housed livestock and stored grain. The Schoppe officially became a museum in 2000.
What you can see
The collection gives a picture of how people in the Achterhoek lived and worked. You can see a farmhouse kitchen with a cloverleaf wood-burning stove and many enamelled pots and pans. There are also agricultural tools, including a threshing flail, a wood drill and a swing plough, and a collection of washing and ironing equipment. A bedroom from the 1930s–1940s, clothing and linen from 1850 to 1950, and a large collection of traditional lace bonnets are also on display.
’t Hoekendaalshuusken
’t Hoekendaalshuusken houses the toilet paper collection. Christel began collecting pieces and rolls in 1988, when she was 16. The collection now comprises more than 600 kinds from around the world, including rolls themed around the football World Cup and European Championship, birthdays and Sinterklaas rhymes. From 1 April to 1 October, the small building can be visited without an appointment and admission is free.
De Knipmutsen
From 1 October to 1 April, the duo De Knipmutsen can be booked by appointment. Using objects and photographs from the museum, they talk about life in earlier times. This is available only at a host location within a radius of approximately 35 km of Aalten.
