Quarters as a looking exercise
The museum has furnished one of the barrack blocks as soldiers’ quarters. Look first at sleeping, eating and storage: how much personal space do you see, and which objects had to be shared by several people? The display gives you a concrete sense of scale for daily life inside the fortress.
Finds come in no neat order
De Baracquen shows bullets, everyday objects and other fortress finds that came to light during the reconstruction. Choose one small object and compare it with the furnished room. Does it fit straight into the story on display, or does it actually make the reconstruction more complicated?
Read a fortress on paper
The map collection shows fortified towns in plan. On a map, first find the ramparts, the entrance and the centre, then walk a small part of that route outside. What looks close on paper but takes much more time on the ground?

De Baracquen follows the joint seasonal schedule of the museums in Bourtange. You buy tickets at the information centre by the car park.
