Pianola Museum makes music rolls sound again

In the Jordaan, pianolas, reproducing pianos and orchestrions stand alongside an archive of tens of thousands of rolls, with a demonstration during the guided tour.

Plan your visit ↗

Holes direct the music

Look at a roll before it is played and note the pattern, tempo markings and winding direction. Then compare what is fixed mechanically with what the demonstrator controls.

Instruments with different ambitions

A pianola helps with playing, whereas a reproducing piano tries to capture a specific performance. For two instruments, ask what information the roll contains and what the mechanism adds.

Archive and concert hall

The large roll collection supports research and performances; weekly concerts have their own calendar. Not every instrument or every roll is used during a regular visit.

Before you go

Friday and Saturday 13.00–17.00, Sunday until 16.00; Monday–Thursday only for groups booked in advance.
