Volendams Museum: behind the familiar village image

The Volendams Museum displays fishermen’s interiors, traditional costume and art from the village. Music and temporary exhibitions add other sides of Volendam to your visit.

Home and dress

The furnished cottages and traditional costume offer a concrete way into daily life. Look at the details of clothing and furnishings and read how they were used. This helps you look beyond the familiar Volendam appearance.

An unusual collection

The cigar-band house (sigarenbandjeshuisje) offers a completely different kind of viewing experience. Notice how small pieces form a larger whole. The attention paid to Volendam as an artists’ village also sets outsiders’ images alongside local history.

Room for a difficult subject too

The exhibition ‘Onderbroken tijd’ (Interrupted Time) deals with the New Year fire of 2001. That subject calls for a different pace from the rest of the collection. Decide with your group how much attention you want to give it; the museum is step-free and has an accessible toilet.

Before you go

Check the current exhibitions and bear in mind the distressing subject of ‘Onderbroken tijd’.
