Ikonenmuseum Kampen: images that ask for attention

The Ikonenmuseum Kampen focuses on religious images from different traditions. Alongside the permanent collection there are temporary exhibitions, spread over more than one part of the building.

Plan your visit ↗

Start with what you see

First look at the figures, gestures and composition of an icon. Which person or action catches your attention? The museum’s explanations then help you give meaning to details that easily go unnoticed without context.

Different origins

The collection is described as including work from Russia, Greece and Ethiopia, among other places. Do not compare whole countries or traditions straight away; start with two individual images. Which similarities and differences can the explanation actually account for?

A temporary route too

The permanent display is downstairs; temporary exhibitions are also shown upstairs and in the Timmertoren. Check the programme and how to get to the rooms you want to see. A larger collection does not mean that every object is always on view.

Before you go

Check special closing days and the heat protocol before you travel to Kampen.
