Kruideniersmuseum: groceries with a past

The Kruideniersmuseum (Grocer’s Museum) in Utrecht combines a historic shop display with exhibition rooms. Packaging, tins and other shop goods make an everyday subject worth a look.

Plan your visit ↗

Looking at a shop differently

In the reconstructed grocer’s shop you can look at the fittings and where the products are placed. What stands out about the way goods are displayed? The setting invites you to name differences from a present-day shop, without any prior knowledge of business history.

Small packages, lots of detail

Tins, soap packaging and other material carry lettering, colours and images. Try looking at that design separately from the product. In this way, a package can prompt questions about selling, storing and making things recognisable.

A museum with a shop

The museum is free to enter and also has a shop selling sweets and groceries. The current location is Hoogt 10. Check Sunday and public holiday hours in advance, as visitor listings do not all give the same schedule on those points.

Before you go

Check Sunday opening and public holidays on the current visitor page before making a special trip to the museum.
