People of Friesland, 1940–1945
In the main display, Frisian and non-Frisian residents relate their experiences of the war. It focuses on the air war over Friesland, resistance to the occupiers and hiding, with particular attention to the Frisian resistance's raid on Leeuwarden prison. One object with a personal story is the Shoes of Madness, which passed from an American pilot through a German soldier to a Jewish person in hiding.
De Terrorist and freedom today
The exhibition De Terrorist, on view since 2023, concerns a holiday home on Ameland where relatives of resistance victims could stay for free after the war. In Vrijheid anno nu, scheduled through 31 December 2027, eleven people from Friesland with different backgrounds speak about their own freedom.
Since 1979
The museum has been active since 1979. It moved to the Kanselarij in 1995 and joined the Fries Museum in its new building on Wilhelminaplein in 2013.
