Museum Helmond: castle history and urban culture in two places

The castle traces the city through the centuries. In autumn 2026, the renewed Kunsthal explores hip-hop and graffiti.

Museum Helmond has two sites with distinct characters. Kasteel Helmond centres on a moated castle almost seven centuries old; Kunsthal Helmond gives space to art and visual culture.

The permanent presentation Het kasteelverhaal begins with the castle built around 1331. The museum follows the families who lived here and the changes they made. A fire in 1549 was a turning point: the castle was restored afterwards.

The building has a museum history too. Its last private residents handed the keys to the municipality in 1921. A museum with objects from Helmond’s past opened in 1929. Today Het kasteelverhaal connects that local history to the castle’s rooms, towers and former residents.

The Kunsthal is a few minutes away on foot. After renovation it unveiled a first new phase in September 2026. Urban Matterz: Helmond and beyond! follows hip-hop in the city, from graffiti and rap to dance and festivals. The museum says a 1987 graffiti exhibition marked a public beginning, although makers had already been active. The show runs from 19 September 2026 to 24 January 2027.

Deep Rooted. The Impact of Graffiti on Art starts with the museum’s own graffiti art collection. Paintings by New York pioneers show how street culture moved onto canvas. The exhibition then turns to artists who developed other forms from graffiti, including photography and performance. It runs from 19 September 2026 to 7 February 2027.

Kasteel Helmond is at Kasteelplein 1; the Kunsthal is at F.J. van Thielpark 7. The museum lists regular hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am–5 pm. The photographs here show the castle, not the exhibitions.
